Biyaherong Drew and premier reality TV host Paolo Bediones visits the Sta. Monica Church in the town of Panay, Capiz that houses the 3rd Biggest Bell in the world and the Biggest in Asia.

Built in 1698, the church’s famous bell was built with 70 sacks of coins and weighs 10.4 tons. Don Juan Reina, the town dentist and known as a metal caster and smith casted this bell. The sound of the bell can be heard 8kms away from the Sta. Monica Church.

Together with Earth Day Network and Kabataang Sambayanang Kristiyano, the group hiked then planted endemic and indigenous trees.

Born to be Wild’s wild adventurer Kiko Rustia features “Bio-Design” wherein people acquire inspiration from nature to live comfortably, develop equipments. Though sometimes we choose disregard the environment for progress and modernity. We still owe a lot of man’s modern technology to the environment.

One of the nature’s inspirations is the termite mound. Engineers and architects take inspiration from it on how they build higher structures. Designers are also studying how they maintain the mounds temperature day and night. Another of these inspirations is the shark’s skin. An Italian wet suit manufacturer took inspiration from the shark’s skin on how the shark easily swims with any direction of water. Another is the humpback whales’ tubercles, a lump on their flippers that help them bring afloat in the water while spinning in the air despite their weight. Wind turbines get their idea from these tubercles that help in getting more energy from the wind. Solar energy also got its inspiration from nature through photosynthesis in which plants get energy from the sun to live. In addition, the spider silk is another inspiration from nature in building thinner and stronger cables for longer and also stronger suspension bridges. Furthermore, another of nature’s inspiration is the flying lemur. It is the animal that has the ability to glide, and because of this, man got the idea to design planes and gliders.

Bio-Design is sustainable. The more we preserve and protect it, the more inspiration we get from it so we’ll live comfortably.

This is the teaser of Trip na Trip's upcoming episode on 9/4/09. Had difficulty in guessing which province they will be visiting because they didn't name it in this teaser. Their clue "#1 Eco Tourism Destination in the Philippines" is still general so I just looked at the clips. The clip wherein Franzen was with a logo of DOJ - Bureau of Corrections gave me the idea about this place in Palawan. And I was right that they'll visit Palawan again and part of their epi is on the infamous Iwahig Penal Colony.

World Cafe: Asia - Manila

World Cafe: Asia on Discovery Travel and Living featured Manila for its season premiere last Monday. There were already news months ago that WCA with host Bobby Chinn will be in Manila to shoot. I also had ideas that they would feature an episode on Manila as they were running teasers of an episode on on the Discovery Travel and Living channel where Bobby was eating street food in Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila. I was unlucky to miss half of the show but I was able to catch Bobby with a local chef cooking Chicken Adobo and with Marketman eating merienda (with halo-halo) in his home. I'll just wait for a replay.

It seems like our very own Filipino Cuisine is starting to get attention from foreign travel shows and chefs. And just months before, No Reservations with its witty travel chef host Anthony Bourdain finally visited the Philippines to shoot in Manila, Angeles and Cebu. I searched for episodes of it on Youtube since it would still take months before they would show it on a local cable channel. Marketman was also on that episode.

Laguna on Trip na Trip

Trip na trip's episode last night mainly focused on Laguna's Anilag Festival. Anilag from "Ani ng Laguna" (Harvest of Laguna) wherein they presented the each of Laguna's cities and towns well known products and goods. It was interesting that I learned about some of Laguna's towns that I have never heard before like Bay, Kalayaan and even Alaminos (wherein the only Alaminos I know was in Pangasinan). So this prompted me to do a little research on this nearby province of Laguna.

According to Wikipedia:

"The Province of Laguna was named after Laguna de Bay, the body of water that forms its northern boundary. Laguna de Bay, in turn, was named after the town of Bay (Laguna de Bay is Spanish which means "Lake of Bay"), the first provincial capital.

Present-day Laguna shows a thriving economy. Peopled by 1,734,618 (1997 estimated population) industrious citizens and possessing a total area of 1760 km² of land, Laguna produces millions of pesos worth of coconuts, rice, sugar, citrus fruits, lanzones and other products. Tourists flock to its beauty spots, especially Pagsanjan Falls, Los Baños Hot Springs, Makiling National Park, Caliraya Lake and many others. Levels of development vary. The towns near Metro Manila have become industrialized whereas the inner towns continue to engage in agricultural production or pursue agri-based industries and cottage and small-scale industries."

It was also nice they showed a clip of Uma and Kat in Cebu wherein Uma was one of the Gawad Kalinga Ambassadors together with some celebrities during Singles For Christ's Conference. too bad I wasn't there.

China, Vietnam Cruise - Trip na Trip - August 22, 2008

Trip na Trip’s episode last night featured their first episode outside the country with Katkat and Uma exploring and cruising through Hong Kong, China and Vietnam.

After an hour and 45 minute Cebu Pacific plane ride arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport, Uma and Katkat went straight to the harbor to board the cruise ship Superstar Virgo. Together with other well-known celebrities in Philippine Television, the cruise headed to its first stop in Sanya, China.

But before they reach their first stop, every episode of Trip na Trip wouldn’t be complete without their infamous “Hamon ng Bayan”. This time, it was modified to a Treasure/ Scavenger hunt throughout the cruise ship. The hunt was participated with Katkat, Uma and some notable celebrities such as Yeng Constantino, Carlo Guevarra, Keren Pascual etc. After the hunt, Uma’s team came with the win.

This week’s episode also featured Uma’s segment “Chef Ka Uma” where he cooked Fried Bihon and Ho Kein Ming with a Filipino Chef working in the cruise ship. Katkat, Keren and another companion Jim tasted Uma’s Fried Bihon and Ho Kein Ming.

When they arrived in Sanya on the island of Hainan, China, Chinese officials didn’t allow the show’s crew to shoot and bring with them their video cameras on the island. Because of this, they just displayed pictures of their stop over in Sanya.

The second part of their cruise expedition and Hong Kong adventure will be shown next week.

Travel on a Shoestring’s premiere episode last night August 14, 2008 was a trip to one of Manila’s nearby provinces, Laguna. The show opened with a question asking random people, “What would you do with P5000?” Host JC Gotinga replied that with just P5000 or less, one can already travel.

That’s what JC did and spent only a little over P3000. But before he started his trip, the host explained that his budget trip doesn’t include the transportation cost because it differs where one person’s starts his/her trip.

DAY 1

-Trees Hostel inside UPLB then explored the Makiling Botanical Gardens nearby.
-Makiling Highlands resort in Pansol and ate nilagang baka.
